In 1994, Mr. Wehle made the extraordinary decision to sell his property to the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust at half the appraised value, ensuring that the land would remain protected and accessible to the public. After his passing in 2002, the remaining inholdings were transferred to the Alabama State Lands Division, and in 2004, the Wehle Land Conservation Center officially opened its doors to the community and beyond.

The property features a network of hiking and horseback riding trails, including the 11.5-mile Wehle Forever Wild Trail System, which winds through pine forests, hardwood bottoms, and scenic wetlands.
