Wehle Land Conservation Center

  • Intro about our park

Nestled in the heart of Bullock County, Alabama, the Wehle Land Conservation Center stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of land stewardship and environmental appreciation. Located just outside the quiet town of Midway, AL 36053, this expansive park offers visitors a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and ecological diversity of Alabama’s rolling hill country. Spanning over 1,500 acres, the Wehle Land Conservation Center is more than just a scenic retreat; it is a living classroom, a sanctuary for wildlife, and a hub for outdoor recreation and conservation education.

The story of the Wehle Land Conservation Center begins with the vision of Robert G. Wehle, a passionate conservationist and outdoorsman who, in the early 1990s, sought to preserve his 1,546-acre estate for future generations. In 1994, Mr. Wehle made the extraordinary decision to sell his property to the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust at half the appraised value, ensuring that the land would remain protected and accessible to the public. After his passing in 2002, the remaining inholdings were transferred to the Alabama State Lands Division, and in 2004, the Wehle Land Conservation Center officially opened its doors to the community and beyond.

Today, the center continues to honor Mr. Wehle’s legacy by providing a wide array of activities and experiences for nature enthusiasts of all ages. The property features a network of hiking and horseback riding trails, including the 11.5-mile Wehle Forever Wild Trail System, which winds through pine forests, hardwood bottoms, and scenic wetlands. Anglers can enjoy fishing in designated ponds and lakes, while campers have access to nine well-equipped campsites with power and water hookups. The center also offers picnic facilities, a covered bridge, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, making it an ideal destination for families, school groups, and outdoor adventurers.

Beyond recreation, the Wehle Land Conservation Center is dedicated to environmental education and stewardship. The onsite Robert G. Wehle Nature Center features interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art audiovisual theater, and hands-on learning opportunities that highlight Alabama’s unique ecosystems. Seasonal events, workshops, and guided nature walks further enrich the visitor experience, fostering a deeper understanding of conservation and the interconnectedness of all living things.

The center’s facilities are available for rental, accommodating everything from organizational retreats and meetings to banquets and educational programs. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful weekend getaway, a hands-on learning adventure, or a place to connect with nature, the Wehle Land Conservation Center offers a welcoming environment where the wonders of the natural world are always within reach.
